Alex Palenski is a sculptor who lives and works between Paris and Normandy. With a builder spirit and a mastery of direct metal, he creates mobile sculptures, graceful compositions that capture the movements of air and light. Working mainly on the plasticity of metals, he has developed his own vocabulary of forms in curved and tense volumes that he works like a goldsmith. Like interior jewelry, his precious and delicate sculptures are all unique stamped pieces. The result is great that is totally unique and impossible to imitate. One piece after another, Alex keeps mixing lightness, delicacy and solidity of the structures. A prowess he now carries out on other materials.

His works are in private collections all over the globe : New York, Rio, Moscow, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beyrouth, Geneva, London… and he has worked in collaboration with renowed interior architects in Paris, Geneva and New York.

Through an interview on The Sociality Family, let us know more about this excellent young artist ( https://www.thesocialitefamily.com/en/blog/alex-palenski-and-flora-mitjavile-artists/ )

Alex, why did you choose to work on mobiles?

I fell in love with steel first when I was a child, but it took me a long time before getting to know this material. It seemed so hard to handle. I was trained on the job and I had to develop my own techniques and get round my gaps so I could find my style. What I’ve always loved with this material have been the mix of lightness, delicacy, and the solidity of structures. The mobile is the top of this pyramid. The technique of direct steel and the construction of mobiles spoke to me straight away: balances, levers, masses… It’s all very natural to me!

What’s the manufacturing process of your works?

For the table and floor mobiles, there is the whole work on the base, which I do in Normandy in the family workshop. There, welding torches, anvils, hammers and welding reign: there is a lot of noise, sparks and dust… In Paris, I make all the mobile parts. There, everything is quiet, the stools (files, wire cutters) are manual, the radio is playing softly. The atmosphere is perfect for this meticulous work.

What do you like best in your work? Can you tell us about your daily life?

It’s actually very simple. I feel exactly the same as when I was playing Lego when I was a child: some sort of quiet excitement that keeps me focused and make me daydream.

Who inspires you most?

The artists working with metal such as Berto Lardera, Marino di Teana, Philippe Hiquily and, in general, Lygia Clark, Barbara Hepworth but also Bob Dylan – not only for his sculptural works!

APPROACH

Luce Couillet uses weaving techniques to create one-of-a-kind and limited-edition mobiles. Articulated around a hand-woven “spine" and decorated with different materials (wood, horsehair, paper, metal), weaving acts as a binding and assembly vector to bring the mobiles to life. The central axis creates a stable, guiding structure which anchors the different shapes revolving around it and moving according to the artist’s intention. The overall effect of the materials and techniques used is an authentic and subtly contemporary mix. Luce’s finishing touch in this artisanal approach to construction is the use of laser technology, which she employs to cut the mobiles’ exacting edges before or after weaving. The shapes obtained are simple, seemingly unsophisticated. But this refined geometry is revisited through transparency and anamorphosis. By playing with different scales, the mobiles become decorative elements or real architectural drawings. Luce works on both personal designs and custom orders.

Isabel Devos, Belgium Artist, graduated at the KASK & CONSERVATORIUM School of Arts Gent. After several years of functional work, she presented her ‘Contemplative Landscapes’ at Casa Argentaurum in Ghent, Belgium. In 2015 she was one of the laureates of Urbanautica Institute’s portfolio review. In March 2017, she showed a selection of her images at Mi Galerie, Paris.

The series ‘Contemplative Landscapes’ pushes the viewer on the border between human and nature to a point that made possible to imagine landscapes from single traces of water on sluices and shores, ready-made details, crops of reality. An expanded view of the world, a further dimension, more open and contemplative. As well said by Dieter Debruyne «by isolating these parts from its context, a peculiar and abstract image arises, referring to the possibility of a landscape and the multi-layered characteristics of a painting». This is not just meant to re-discover the universe in a microcosm; in this act of recognition of the beauty of nature there is something redeeming. «Because it’s in our nature, humans tempt to control nature by building waterways, sluices, and artificial lakes. Hence nature reacts on these borders by leaving remnants behind.» The impact of certain artists is inevitable.

Through photography Isabel gives us a pictorial view of the world, with an open and therefore contemplative mind. This is not just meant to re-discover the universe in a microcosm; in this act of recognition of the beauty of nature, there is something redeeming. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder people say. And maybe it is, and there is no artifice, bank, wall, or anything that can truly contain it. Her landscapes retain an expressionist attitude, with a reminder of the cross-references to the color field research of Rothko, the dull and somewhat dramatic palette of William Congdon landscapes, the attention on daily subjects of Richter, and the ability to mislead the viewer and to cause distraction on “what it is” of Rudolf Stingel. All these elements feed Isabel Devos’s vision, an expressive synthesis of rare beauty. An operation of abstraction that is not new. Still the results of Isabel are impressive and of rare beauty.

Yumi Watanabe

Afterimage of Love” by Yumi Watanabe

Do you remember being lovestruck? When butterflies swarmed your gut and goosebumps covered every inch of your skin and a wave of emotions swept over you? Do you remember? A similar effect awaits you at the installation titled ‘Afterimage of Love’ by Yumi Watanabe; a revisitation of feelings you may have once had. Afterimage is a non-specific term that refers to an image continuing to appear in one’s vision after the exposure to the original image has ceased. Positive afterimages replace and layer in hues similar to those of the original sight. They are often very brief, lasting less than half a second. However, a stimulus which elicits a positive image may also precipitate into a negative afterimage via the adaptation process.

Carefully numbered to an exact 1001, flower petals romanticise the interior walls of the gallery. Artificial petals made of overpainted and laminated photos, each of which is anecdotal in both form and essence. The artist creates and furnishes these petals of “afterimage”, using a process connecting analogue and digital tools of photography. Reminiscing of a classical image of love as seen in movies, scattering petals everywhere, like in Sam Mende´s ‘American Beauty’, Yumi Watanabe is tracing petals of memory and leftovers of love. This ‘afterimage’ is the origin of Yumi Watanabe’s relentless search for her memory from the past. The memories appear in fragments, occasionally in an instant flicker, but they never cease to bloom into alluring blossoms. Fallen and scattered, they remain within ourselves and render the gradient from which we periodically analyse our situation. Delving deep into the struggling roles of history and memory, the perspective and personal interpretation of the artist provides a manual for understanding ourselves. The visitor is navigated by the artist towards the ‘haunting and activating’ qualities of memory. Art that engages with memory embodied in material and spatial conditions is examined alongside works that reflect upon memory’s effects through time. Contextualizing the role of memory in visual theory and aesthetic politics, Marcel Proust’s optics to Bernard Stiegler’s analysis of memory’s ‘industrialization’, this exhibition surveys the diversity of situations and registers in which contemporary artists explore memory as well.

Yumi Watanabe was born and educated in Japan. Nowadays, she is a commuter switching between cultures and continents, dividing her time between her home country, Japan and her current base, Düsseldorf as well as in Tijuana, Mexico for producing parts of her work. She weaves diverse influences of philosophical and historical impacts and offers opportunities to experience those in her work. Yumi Watanabe is one of the most interesting and complex thinking contemporary artists at the moment, particularly because, she tries to combine and play with typical influences and their often unpredictable corresponding consequences.

Ferdi B Dick, a sought-after animator who has produced work for multiple major brands, Ferdi is also a self-taught maker who enjoys working with his hands. He obtained an honours degree in graphics and illustration from the University of Stellenbosch in 2000. Lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He has participated in several group exhibitions and art fairs both nationally and internationally, including Cape Town, Franschhoek in South Africa and New York.

Ferdi B. Dick started off as a 3D animator and subsequently moved towards physical crafted sculptures. The result is a body of work that plays superbly in the overlap between digital and tangible, portraying three-dimensional creatures with exaggerated features directly influenced by cartoons and animations.

Rather than a celebration of mass culture, Ferdi’s sculptures evoke a dystopian world. While his characters might appear playful, they are wistful musings on lost innocence and the burdens of adulthood. His sculpture series I Don’t Believe in Unicorns depicts ultra-pop unicorns and bears in moments of emotional distress, whose tears have become giant crutches propping them up.

A recurring theme of fluidity and molten forms unifies his characters, a direct influence from his animation work that is heightened by his use of polished bronze. They start out as digital models, find material form via 3D printing, and finally are cast in bronze.

Jury: “Within his refined works, the subtle beauty of traditional graphic drawing narrates the story behind it. The exhibited works welcome people to explore the world drew by the artist with his emotional and personal perspective."

Tsou’s works have always been known for his delicate style and rich storys. He likes to embed various graphics in the paintings as the clues to convey a special message but also offer the readers the possibility of free interpretation. For example, in the dark, old city of Dance Feather, advertisements and posters posted and hanged everywhere suggest the historical context of the city; The figure of Big Brother and Stalin’s beard representing authoritarian rule, it has deepened the impression of a gloomy and conservative city. Similarly, the feathers inserted in the magician’s hat undoubtedly symbolize the imagination and creativity of art, but it can also be the darkness who drives out the sun, a lullaby that evokes dreams, or a soothing nice tea. Lifes and experience in London, England, let Tsou knows very well what makes our life and city richer and better.

Artists try to reaches every possibility of various fields. He does not limit himself. In addition to painting, he also participates in space design and to do many different types of cases. He explained, “Everything I do is making choices. After many attempts, I will make my creation more precise." Regarding art, for him at this stage, it is only part of life, because art always comes from life. In order to live a good life and make a good art, start by enjoying every moment of choice.

YIA#01 – 鄭崇孝 Chong Xiao ZHENG

Zheng Chong-Xiao, painter, 1988 born in Taipei。 With the concepts of “imitation” and “transformation,” Zheng makes use of the classical elements in both Chinese and Western arts and add the character “Pouting Boy” in the composition to reflect the contemporary life in nowadays. After that, Zheng keeps exploring his material for reproduction, from photograph to recycled canvas, and even the traditional Chinese landscape painting in his latest series. All the elements of reproduction enrich the visual experience. In 2017, he had his solo exhibition <Pouting Boy: Reproduction Plan> in Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

In the process of trying to recreate Chinese ancient paintings, Zheng mainly used Chinese literati landscape paintings, first through the watercolor experiment, and then studied the Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden, and then finish the oil painting in Japanese comic and animation style. Zheng believes that the concept of abstract, and literati temperament in Chinese landscape paintings has a great gap with the aesthetic experience in our lives today. Therefore, now he stacks the texture of the mountains with color blocks and then draws the layers of thick green leaves, trying to reproduce Chinese landscape painting through comic style, in order to find a balance between beauty and ancient times in production.

He converted his image into a self-portrait “Pouting Boy “, who traveled in the paintings and replaced the ancient figures, and he has intervened in ancient landscapes by the elements of the technology and energy as the theme, therefore, the traditional literati thinking such as the natural exploration and meditations are transformed into a familiar video game style of the younger generation, which creates a sense of multiple conflicts in the picture, and also provides a new visual experience in which the viewer projects himself as a natural “guardian."

Zheng, who grew up in the Industrial Zone, was deeply shocked by the coexistence of the ecological green park and polluting factories along the riverside. Therefore, in the composition of his artworks, the theme of nature, environmental protection, energy, etc. is a major part of it, and attempt to seek a balance between technology and ecology in time and space. His works also pay special attention to the relationship between human beings, machines and the environment, and his narrative approach is leading the viewers to travel in the mountains and waters in his works, to figure out the possibility of future civilization development and environmental symbiosis.
